Abstract

Gout or gouty arthritis is a disease caused by the accumulation of monosodium urate crystals in the body. Uric acid is the final metabolic result of purine, which is one of the components of nucleic acid found in the nucleus of body cells. Increased and high levels of uric acid in the blood can cause disorders and cause several symptoms such as pain in the joints and are often accompanied by the onset of extreme pain for sufferers. Gout often occurs especially in men, starting from puberty to reaching a peak age of 40-50 years, while in women, the percentage of uric acid begins to be found after entering menopause. The incidence of high uric acid in both developed and developing countries is increasing, especially in men aged 40-50 years. The factors that cause people to suffer from gout are genetics or family history or excessive intake of purine compounds, excessive alcohol consumption, obesity, hypertension, impaired kidney function and certain drugs (especially diuretics). WHO data shows the prevalence of gouty arthritis in the world is 34.2%. Gout arthritis often occurs in developed countries such as America. The prevalence of gout arthritis in the United States is 26.3% of the total population. The increase in the incidence of gout arthritis does not only occur in developed countries, but also in developing countries, one of which is Indonesia (1). The increase in the incidence of gout arthritis (high levels of uric acid in the body) can possibly increase cholesterol levels. Cholesterol levels are regulated by the body through complex mechanisms, but the balance between input and output that occurs is not always right, so it tends to cause an increase in cholesterol levels (2). The causes of increased cholesterol levels in people without lipoprotein disorders are a diet high in cholesterol and saturated fatty acids, obesity, lack of exercise, the aging process and decreased estrogen levels in women who have gone through menopause. Increased cholesterol can occur if someone has other risk factors such as DM (Diabetes Mellitus). The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) report states that currently there are around 422 million people with diabetes mellitus in the world and Indonesia is ranked 5th with the largest number of people with diabetes mellitus in the world.
